Forum: GratefulDead Subject: TJI- Am I missing something? West High 80-06-20 case study

So, at the bottom of the list we have the 1st transfer- an AUD. Working our way up, we have a Donohue SBD, then the 1st Charlie Miller SBD production, then a Jay Ashley re-work of the CM SBD, another AUD, then an update to the Donohue SBD, then a pitch correction of the Jay Ashley transfer, then a HS MATRIX, then another guy's SBD (1st set only), then a recent update from Charlie Miller to his previous version.

Holy crap!!! Seriously, this is overload. Isn't there some way to police this stuff? Don't get me wrong, I am maniacal about hacking my way through the thicket to find what sounds best to me, but it takes a pretty serious time commitment and it seems like there needs to be some thinning of the herd.

The case study- most recent transfer first:

You know this is an "archive," right? It's a completist venture that doesn't just try to have the best source, but views every source as a document of the show and of the fan culture.
Snarkiness aside, it can be a bit time consuming (and confusing) to wade through all the sources, but compared to the pre-archive days, it's a trade-off I very happily accept. I "thin the herd" within my own collection; I'm happy there are publicly accessible places like this that don't.

So are you saying that since there are already a few copies on the archive that I shouldn't out one up that fixes all of the problems they have? If you don't like it, don't download it. Geez, I spend all day fixing a bunch of problems that I didn't know were there and all you do is complain.

your welcome.

Charlie, you have unintentionally written a perfect Mother's Day post. Oh, and thanks for all your hard work!

Four, do the "date added" thing and then you'll see the latest ones. Of course, those might not be the ones you'd pick. Not everyone prefers the restored Sistine Ceiling; certainly it would be amazing if we could have all versions:

Is there a way for you to remove the previous transfer when you post the new one? Or is it a one-way street? Upload only?

Thanks Charlie! Back since the cassette, then VHS HiFi (Betamax/PCM, even), then DAT, then CD, then Archive.org I've always appreciated an upgrade, *And I Still Do!* I use the 'etree #s', then source, to decide what I'd like to listen to or share...

Peace & Love to All & their Moms (for putting up with...)

The old adage "beggars shouldn't be choosey" comes to mind . . .

Elkdog has got it right. I'm glad to have the options at our fingertips. Sure beats looking at passed -around dog-eared lists and waiting for tapes to arrive in the mail, hoping that what you traded for is what you were hoping for - a lot of mystery, time and trust went into every tape acquisition. All arguments of analog vs. digital aside, this site is like finding the end of the rainbow, with its ever-expanding and updated pot of gold.

Case in point, the recent addition of the Charlie Miller '76 AUD upgrades and previously unavailable SBDs added an additional one or two more choices to some dates, but having the opportunity to listen to the previously unavailable pristine SBD of 6/28/76 over either of the other two dogbreath audience tapes that have been circulating for decades was a joy rather than a hassle. I'm not knockin' the audience tapes here, I'm just saying that various folks are seeking different choices, be they, AUDs, SBDs or Matrices - and to be able to choose to your liking from 'what is out there' is a far better option than, say, someone choosing what you and the others should listen to - without discussion.

What you appear to be asking for is some kind of policing or 'filtering' of these public archives, which to me smacks of some level of some kind of one-sided preferences, which in turn, in effect, can be viewed as a form of censorship . . . 'from now on, the archive will only make available SBDs and Matrices and Auds will be removed 'to reduce the clutter' . . . and from now on, you will only have the new 'revised' Huckleberry Finn' to read as your only choice. . . . Extreme example I know, but archives are intended to be depositories for all pertinent artifacts, it is up to the person who peruses the collection to take the time to choose between the available objects/options to find the item that best suits their needs. Enjoy your finds!
